KF Colleague Spotlight - Martin Cortes
Martin, you joined our San Francisco showroom team in March 1997. How did your life journey bring you to Kneedler Fauchère?
I had been living in San Francisco for about 6 years at that point, and I had just started my family. I was looking for a place where I could grow and have a respectful work environment, and I felt these things when I first started here at KF.
You oversee Showroom Operations and keep the showroom in tip-top shape. What do you enjoy most about your position?
I do many things every day, but I enjoy seeing the result of all the work the most. For example, after we move all the furniture and fabrics for market week, or for a refresh, it makes me feel proud when I see it all put together.
Celebrating an amazing 28 years with KF this year (major kudos!), you have certainly seen a lot of change. What is a favorite memory as you think back on the years?
My favorite memory would have to be KF’s 50th Anniversary. I was still relatively new to the company, and being part of that big celebration was great. I remember both door entrances were decorated with 5,000 roses, there were about 800 guests, a jazz band, and even a huge oyster bar on ice. One of the more impactful parts of this memory is that my manager at the time, Bill Webber, took me to the store to buy a suit and other attire for the event. All these things are what made me feel that I was in the right place for me.
A little bird mentioned you have a green thumb when you’re not in the showroom – tell us more about that side of you!
I come from a town in Mexico where agriculture is the main sustenance for people, and I grew up working on my father's land. We primarily grew corn and sorghum. Now here in my home, my front and backyard are full of plants. I have lemon, plum, loquat, pear trees, and even a cactus. The rest of the space is filled with succulents that I enjoy caring for.
Considering all the experiences you’ve had at KF, and the many people you’ve met, what do you find the most meaningful about working within the design community?
I like the fact that we work with designers that create the amazing out of so little. The people who help make that happen are everyone working in the showroom every day. I am happy to have met many amazing and dedicated coworkers throughout my years here at KF - they have made my time here meaningful.
